DGTG Wine Wednesday: A Look at Victoria and Albert's 9K Bottle of Vino

Last month I had the distinct pleasure of dining at Victoria and Albert's with my Hubby for our Anniversary! Victoria and Albert's located in Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, is the most exclusive dining experience in all of Walt Disney World and offers those lucky enough to grace it's intimate dining room an incredibly spectacular evening.  We had the night of a lifetime complete with an invitation inside the kitchen, and I promise to post the review soon, but today's Wine Wednesday here at DGTG.

As I played it safe that night by sipping on delicate flutes filled with a perfectly delicious French Rose Champagne ($22./glass), I couldn't help but peruse Victoria and Albert's extensive wine list to see what I may have missed out on when something absolutely OUTRAGEOUS caught my eye... a $9,000.00 bottle.

Yes...you heard correctly...9K.  This luxurious French Bordeaux, which costs as much as a used Honda, goes by the name of Château Margaux 1961.  I was able to call Victoria and Albert's and to the CM's knowledge, this pricey vino currently holds the title of "The most expensive wine on Walt Disney World Property."

Chateaux Margaux is the "Go To" label for wine enthusiasts and is known for being one of the most sought after Bordeaux in the industry.  Chateau Margaux also has an impressive history with origins dating back to the early 1400s.  WOW!!!  Time honored techniques still prevail at Chateau Mageaux: The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is fermented in Oak vats.

Unfortunately, I have yet to taste this historically luxurious wine, but the tasting notes proclaim it to be opulent and rich with with a multi-dimensional bouquet reminiscent of ripe black currents, spicy vanilla oak, and violets.  As with all rich Bordeaux, Chateau Magaux pairs well with lamb, veal, poultry, and game...all of which are commonly available on Victoria and Albert's menu.

I had to dig around a little to find more info on this "nectar of God" and discovered this on the wine maker's website:

"It has sometimes been said that 1961 was the greatest vintage since 1900. Our memory does not always serve us well, but there is no doubt that this vintage displays quite extraordinary qualities, which we were not to find again, in any case, until the 1982 vintage. 1961 not only benefited from remarkable weather conditions, but also from the first achievements of what was called "modern oenology" under the inspiration of Professor Ribereau Gayon and Doctor Emile Peynaud. Château Margaux 1961 is a sumptuous wine, at the same time tender, harmonious, rich, very dense and full of freshness. Its bouquet is unique : over the smell of undergrowth, so characteristic of the great wines of that era, comes a layer of indescribable fruity and floral fragrance... Smelling this wine is a moment of unforgettable excitement, of pure emotion! The sensations that come through on the palate are a harmonious match to the aromatic festival on the nose : its tannic density asserts itself smoothly and delicately, the finish is a strong and yet tender caress. A really wonderful wine. Today, the 1961 has lost none of its freshness, even though the magnums are starting to show more consistency than the bottles. Of course, it can be opened now, but it was built for eternity..."
